Collio’s soil, often called “Ponca”, consists of marl and sandstone of Eocene origin. The sea and the Alps influence its climate, creating a mild and temperature micro-climate.
At the end of the 19th century, Giovanni Bolle, experimental director of sericulture and oenology of Gorizia, wrote the following passage: “The rows are arranged on terraces called ronchi and cover an area of 500 hectares. The wine, almost entirely white, is among the best wines of southern Austria. That of the Collio is also known beyond the borders of the empire with the name Ribolla”.
